My house has wheels

Sittin’ Tight

I checked the forecast this morning (actually all night long as thunder storms woke me up every two hours) and could see no direction to go. Today it's rain, tomorrow it's more storms like yesterday. Wednesday is the next possibility for being on the road. I'm parked in a good place, tornado protection on site, drainage seemed good, and am protected from the winds. Far better to sit here, bored, than out there. Great news that my very own US...

Now, that was a storm

I responsibly kept the weather alerts on all day as the storm passed through. This meant the alerts came on every 5 or 10 minutes, driving me crazy. But, I couldn't ignore them because this was a tornado storm. Tornado warnings are still up for south of here, but for now it's quite calm where I am. There was lots of rain, and lightning, but the winds were light. My solar panels turned off at 11:15, the street lights came on, and we didn't see...

Vicksburg Battlefield

This is a very pretty place, and one of the top battlefields to see. As usual the visitor center has exhibits and a movie to get oriented, then its a driving tour through miles of monuments, statues, and sign posts honoring those that served and explaining the details of the long siege for control of the Mississippi River. Vicksburg is notable because it highlights the role of the navies in the Civil War. There's a recovered ironclad boat...

Vicksburg

The cardinals are in full dress and full song, and there's a lot of them here. I'm at a casino RV lot, mainly to visit the CW battle site, but the town itself looks very interesting, very scenic next to the Mississippi River. I'll have time tomorrow for being a tourist. Some weather is coming in this weekend, heavy rain, so I'll wait it out here before moving. RV talk: I forgot to set my breakaway cable this morning, it came loose and the wind...

Moving On to Vicksburg

The daffodils are blooming, some trees are blooming, and by tomorrow or so the trees will show some green. So I guess Spring has arrived. I've done a lot here, and can't do much more in fetching records. So tomorrow I'm moving to Vicksburg for a weekend R&R. Go see the battlefield, park at a casino, do some sightseeing in town. And decide where to go next. Without having a specific mission to visit this area I would never in my life have the...

Somewhere in Central Mississippi

I'm parked in the primo spot overlooking a nice lake out in woods. It looked close to where I need to go, and only $10 a night, full hookups. While I am only 2 or 3 air miles from anything, the road is more like 10 miles through the forest. The drive up from Biloxi was pleasant, the parkways and freeways were quite pretty, and traffic in Miss isn't a problem. I stayed on the biggest roads, which was wise because once I had to take the secondary...

Mississippi

Here I am near Biloxi, just for an overnight before heading north to Jackson to do some genealogy research for a friend. I'm looking forward to the research, something I love to do, but have trepidations about Mississippi. My vision of MS is of the race conflicts of the 60's, crazy governors, cruel hangings, the evils of slavery. I'll be going through towns I first heard about from Walter Cronkite when I was 14. Today is the 100th birthday of...

Moving On

I'll move a bit west to Biloxi, Mississippi tomorrow for an overnight, then a longish drive north to near Jackson, MS. This is to do some genealogy research for a friend, and then gets me around New Orleans and environs during Carnival. It gives me a great chance to get acquainted with Mississippi (my only ideas on the place are totally negative) and get back to where I can eat Southern food. I'm addicted to Southern, but know full well that...

Regional Foods

Many years ago I was in Edmonton, Alberta, and had dinner at a Mexican restaurant. I made a rule: Never have Mexican in Canada. I've refined that rule during my travels. Don't expect seafood unless you can drive to the sea in 2 hours. Mexican is only good when you are close to Mexico or there are Mexicans around. Beef is best where they raise cattle. Cheese is outstanding where you find large dairy operations. Fruits are best where they grow...

Satsumas

Regular readers know that my favorite citrus is the Satsuma and that I constantly look for them when I travel. 99% of them are grown in California and the main market is the US west and Canada. But, some can be found in the South, and I'm in one of those places. Just north of Mobile on I-65 is the town of Satsuma, and here in nearby Foley is Satsuma street. The Mississippi Delta is another place I've found them. The Satsumas around here are hard...

Yet Another Pair of Tires

Another pair of tires for my trailer, but this time they were just worn down. Usually they get destroyed by taking road metal or by a failed axle. Still, I never like putting out the money, and they get more expensive every time. Next up, very soon, are a pair for my truck's rear axle, which wear twice as fast as my fronts. If I want to do any beach driving in Texas, I'll have to do them before venturing out on the sand. My truck tires wear...
