My house has wheels

Moving On to Vicksburg

The daffodils are blooming, some trees are blooming, and by tomorrow or so the trees will show some green. So I guess Spring has arrived.

I’ve done a lot here, and can’t do much more in fetching records. So tomorrow I’m moving to Vicksburg for a weekend R&R. Go see the battlefield, park at a casino, do some sightseeing in town. And decide where to go next.

Without having a specific mission to visit this area I would never in my life have the occasion to do so. Cruising around in the backwaters of Mississippi isn’t exactly a big tourist draw.

This is national forest area, and is very large. Logging trucks are a constant cause of fear as we pass on very narrow roads. The trees being harvested are long-needle pines, narrow and straight. They seem to be milled to be telephone poles, or other poles if shorter. The land is only slightly hilly, with standing water in the low spots. It’s quite marshy here, and even on high ground the soil underfoot can be soft and spongy. Or it’s a mixture of caliche and red dirt, gummy and sticky. I’d say it wasn’t “good” land, usefulness being quite limited besides pines. There are some cattle, and chicken factories.

So, I’m glad I had the opportunity to see it, and am glad to be moving on.
