Marty's Travels

My house has wheels

Somewhere in Central Mississippi

I’m parked in the primo spot overlooking a nice lake out in woods. It looked close to where I need to go, and only $10 a night, full hookups. While I am only 2 or 3 air miles from anything, the road is more like 10 miles through the forest.

The drive up from Biloxi was pleasant, the parkways and freeways were quite pretty, and traffic in Miss isn’t a problem. I stayed on the biggest roads, which was wise because once I had to take the secondary roads they were in poor condition. I’m very glad I resisted the lure to take a back road shortcuts to shave a few miles.

I’m here to gather some genealogy information for a friend. I had some hours this afternoon to check out the public library in the larger town hereabouts, my usual starting place. I had a heckuva time finding the library. It was 2 years old, very nice, but had absolutely no markings of any kind on the exterior. The only way I knew it was a library was that the people going and coming looked like library patrons so I parked and gave it a chance. I’ve never seen a public building with absolutely zero signage on the exterior.

It was the same on the interior, completely devoid of any signage (except the icons on the restrooms, but no sign pointing to the restrooms). No signs indicating “Fiction” or “Reference” or “Childrens”, absolutely no signage at all. Now, it’s a small library in a small town and easy to find things, but I’ve never seen a building devoid of signage of any kind.

I’m here for a few days.

  1. Lorcan, great to hear from you. To answer your question, not today but it wouldn’t surprise me to find some later.

To my other readers, Lorcan is in Dublin (well, in a suburb) and we’ve been working for the last 13 years (Gawd that sounds awful) on the Flannery folk that located in the US. When I go to Ireland, I go to meet up with my Flannery cousins there.

I’m pleased that at least someone in Ireland is following my blog, I love those folks a lot. If any others in the old country want to check in, I’d love hear from you.

  2. No Signage in the library? Hmmmmmm maybe reading isn’t a strong suit down there…….sorry couldn’t resist
