Marty's Travels

My house has wheels

Almost back

The winds, rain, and thunderstorms at Newport weren't going to let up for at least a week, so I grabbed a break in the action to head to I-5. Tomorrow I should reach Chimacum, but with plenty of rain along the way. Today a slide blocked 101 on my aborted route, so I dodged that one.

Newport

It was a pleasant day to drive to Newport, to wait out a storm. When I get a calm day I'll likely head to I-5 to avoid the nasty weather. Winds have been high, 40-50 mph at times.

Staying put for a bit

The forecast for tonight into Sunday is "dangerously windy and wet". No doubt 101 will be blocked by debris or slides briefly, but I'm going to try to advance to Newport on Monday. Meanwhile, it will be books and video games.

Reedsport, OR

It's raining, with a storm coming in this weekend. I'm in Reedsport, near Florence, and will sit out the storm for a few days. The town is one step up from a village, and given the time of year, an almost dead place. But, as usual, the views are excellent.

Slide fixed?

When I talked to a guy that was referred to me by a shop, it struck me that he didn't understand what my problem was or where I was located. When he didn't show up anywhere near the time we talked about I was coming up with a new plan. He was an astonishingly old and slight man, nearly completely deaf. He complained he didn't have enough tools. He went straight to work. The job involves laying on your back on coarse gravel/rock in the dark,...

Slide trouble again

As I prepared to head north this morning, my big slide wouldn't come in. It will require a tech to fix. There are no shops open this weekend. The nearest shops are one hour away. I'm in a nice rv park, discovered by accident, that is operated by Escapees, and they've said I'm good in my parking place until whenever. So it will be whenever when I get out of Port Orford...

Port Orford, Oregon

It was good to get out of California. Port Orford is a nice little town, more a village. It has a tiny port that works with boat lifts and dollies or trailers to store the boats on high ground. The high point here are the coastline views, I think this village has three capes or heads nearby which I'll explore tomorrow.

Del Norte County, CA

From Crescent City I can go to Brookings, OR; Grants Pass, OR; and Eureka, CA. The highway to Eureka involves a one-lane road, and driving at 25 mph around redwood trees. Del Norte is adjacent to Humboldt, Curry, and Josephine counties, very productive cannabis locales. Last week the county re-affirmed it's ban on all cannabis business. Which means they have chosen to leave everything to the illegal, black, market. As a consumer, this isn't bad...

Crescent City

After 8 days of rain (and 2 earthquakes) I got out of Eureka and landed in Crescent City at one of my favorite rv parks. I'll be here a few days; the forecast is sunshine for a week which makes the Oregon coast a most pleasant drive ahead of me.

And more on CA cannabis

It's been very wet here, so it was a good time to watch government tv while the new ordinances for cannabis in Humboldt County were being presented and public input taken. Spend a week watching public policy being made? I wouldn't recommend it. California's cannabis legalization system seems to go by the term "dual permitting", which means you need a local jurisdiction's permit to get a state license. I was in awe when I first saw the California...

Earthquake

I've heard/seen references to "California Earthquake Authority", which struck me as a bit odd as it sounds like they authorize and regulate earthquakes. That is entirely plausible in this state. Turns out, it's an insurance program. But this morning I sat through a 4.5 magnitude for about 30 seconds. Just about any size of earthquake is of little matter in an RV, and this was a tiny one compared to others I've felt. So I thought of calling the...
