I avoid (mostly) chains when looking for a green chile cheeseburger in New Mexico, and I missed a couple of places I wanted to try. Here’s where I went:
Bode’s General Store in Abiquiu. This was one of the better burgers, there’s a kitchen in the back of the general store, and of course a beautiful location. $10. Price includes fries and an iced tea.
5 Star Burgers in Sante Fe. Passable. This is a relatively new chain that have waitpeople take orders and deliver the burgers. $15.
Bert’s Burgers in Santa Fe. One of my favorites. They claim to have invented the GCCB. $9.
The Owl Cafe in San Antonio next to the Bosque NWR. It has been and still is my favorite, some folk say they are the best. $10.
The Buckhorn in San Antonio, across from the Owl. Perfectly fine, but no match to the Owl. There’s a lot of hype around this place right now, not quite justified. $13.
Sparky’s in Hatch. Not bad, the closest to me while I stay in Deming. Their BBQ is far better done than the burgers, though the burgers have a distinct smoke flavor. $10.
So the Owl is still my favorite, though Bert’s comes in close. Bode’s is great because of it’s location.
