My house has wheels

It’s a mystery

I spent the morning with the guys at Jimmy’s RV Repair trying to find the cause of my excessive tire wear, with no luck. The problem was, a single tire was fine and then in about 400 miles half the tread was missing on one side. Just the one tire. Jimmy specializes in axles and stuff and we lifted, measured, squared, leveled, every angle he could think of, and all checked out perfectly. We inspected tires, equalizers, springs, every bolt, and found nothing. This was the axle I replaced Thanksgiving last year in Florida.

I checked every manufacturer’s stamp on the axle tubes, backing plates, and wheels to verify they were the right parts. And photographed all that stuff. Two axles specced to carry 10,400 pounds, and I weighed in at 9700 pounds on them.

I had them lube the bearings on the other axle, one bearing was worn pretty bad. And he cleaned up the brake electrical system that the guy in Jacksonville botched when he replaced the axle.

I replaced the worn tire on the way back. I don’t like the plan we settled on, but it was the only option:

As I head to San Antonio (Texas) I check the tires about every 50 miles, especially looking for signs of wear on the new tire. If I see anything within about 100 miles, I’ll return to Deming. After that I go to the nearest town for another look at the situation. Not the best plan when doing West Texas, but I’ll stick to the interstate this time, and I always have my roadside service.
