My house has wheels

Whidbey Island Tour

Steve and Sandy inherited a beach-side home on Whidbey Island, so they invited us over for a tour of the island today. They did a walk-on the ferry a while back and we hung out in the Port Townsend area. So, we did the walk-on the other direction.

Being from Seattle, I’m quite familiar with Whidbey as access is good from there (relatively speaking), but since I’ve had my RV I haven’t had the chance to see it much. So it was great to have a driver give the tour today.

We’re always interested in finding places to park our rigs, especially in nice places. The state park facilities on the island are extremely popular, but very tight given the prized old-growth red cedar which dominates. On the other hand, the views are gorgeous (San Juan Islands) and the beaches are pretty.

They made us lunch at the “beach house”, and I could easily live there. The house is on Rosario Strait, and by beach they mean if the deck wasn’t there you’d step on the shoreline out the door. Now, mother nature calls the shots here with wind, rain, and tides so the beach can be rocks, sand, or detritus depending on her mood. The views can be hugely expansive of the San Juans, the Olympic Peninsula, and Vancouver Island. As the marine air changes it’s character, just gazing out over Rosario and Juan de Fuca Straits, changes by the minute. Add in the constant boat traffic, and I’m wondering how Steve ever gets any work done on the place.

It was an excellent day.
