Pot: Oregon

In Oregon, marijuana is perfectly legal to have, consume, store, give away, and grow. It is not legal to buy or sell cannabis in Oregon. Therefore a Burning Man economy has erupted for pot: give everything away for free, it will all work out in the end.

So right now, all pot in Oregon is free.

But on October 1 existing medical shops can sell pot at retail to anyone. But there are no taxes of any kind on pot until January 1, which is quite interesting from an economic angle not to mention the advantage over Washington state stores (37% taxes vs 0%). Without the taxes, the per-gram price for flowers will be around $5, and that’s probably too expensive.

I’ve said before that Oregon is capable of supplying about 6 states with marijuana, so given that it’s harvest time, there is a lot of product around right now. That product is worth maybe nothing or $1 a gram destined for the retail market. Better for the farmer to keep to the black market at maybe $2.

A most interesting experiment….
