Depending on the weather I’ll be in Willcox for a few days getting some birding in, or waiting out a storm. The forecasts aren’t that great in this part of the country.
I’m at Cattlerest Bar and RV Park, whose RV portion just opened up a couple of months ago. Nice people bought it (he’s a commercial airline pilot, partially retired) and have got it fixed up pretty nice. A cattlerest was a place to unload the livestock off your truck after they had been traveling for 24 hours. The new owners took down the old corals and put RV spaces in. The bar has a big dance floor (dances every other Saturday), plenty of game tables, and all-around excellent feel for the cowboy west. Live music can happen. He isn’t listed in any of the RV directories yet.
Address is 933 S Haskell Ave, Willcox 85643. There are about 20 spaces, 10 with sewer. Big pull-thrus. $20 a night. I’ll know more in a few days, but I think I’ll be stopping here frequently. Right now half the spaces are filled with contractors building a monstrous solar farm near Benson. That explains why the RV parks in Benson were filled up a while back, so I’ll have to go see that project.
Many more services in Willcox than in Benson. Several Mexican restaurants, and a BBQ place, which I’ll try tomorrow. Willcox doesn’t rate a Walmart, but it does have a new Safeway.
