Public Land Closures

I’ve seen a lot Jersey walls and orange cones blocking entrance to our lands. None was more dramatic than the road to Lees Ferry. Lees Ferry is at the very beginning of the Grand Canyon, the place where you can put in a raft to drift the river, by far the best way to experience the canyon. There was the expected barrier, but I was surprised to see what I’d call a small army (of park police and local law enforcement) guarding the road.

Getting a trip down the Colorado through the canyon is a difficult proposition, likely a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing. Guides and customers spend a lot of money for the privilege, sometimes years in advance. For visitors from a long ways away, and their guides, extreme disappointment would be the order of the day. The road is closed, and the small army is there to enforce it.

I hope tempers don’t get out of control there.
