Marty's Travels

My house has wheels

Choke Canyon State Park

This has become one of my favorite stopping places, halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. An excellent birding and wildlife place, and in the off-season a wonderful, quiet place. It’s always a surprise to me see it was developed by the Bureau of Reclamation, not the Army Corps of Engineers. The facilities are equal to COE standards. The drawback is that it is now completely surrounded by oil facilities, which wasn’t the case eight years ago.

But I’m completely jazzed at going to one of my favorite places, Corpus Christi, tomorrow, more specifically North Padre Island. The beach! Driving on the beach! Birds all over the place, a lot of which can’t be seen anywhere else. When I tire of the view on the island, I’ll move to Goose Island State Park, and go look at the Whooping cranes. These are the places that keep me tied down to Texas for weeks and months.

The weather is hot and humid, and nothing to change it in the future. It’ll help to be next to the water, but just a bit….
