Things to do in Ely, Nevada

Not much. I’ve spent several hours messing around the train museum, which is a complete working railroad yard open to anyone to poke around. They have several diesel and steam locomotives, claim they are the last place to service steam locos. Crawl around the cars, watch the activity in the loco service bays. Help yourself in an environment normally off-limits to casual observers. Great place.

I took US93 from Vegas to Ely because I hadn’t been on it and it was a scenic route. Another route is NV318, which I rejected because it was unknown to me and there was very little to see along the way. Turns out 318 is said to be the best-maintained road in America because it’s a race-course for “stock” vehicles two times a year. Apparently the cars can reach 200 mph across the valley floors on this road. Race car fans should take note. RV’rs should consider this road when making the Vegas-Ely run. See if you can do it at an average of 100mph. Either way, the races are in May and September.

Tomorrow, it’s Wells. Ely has more interesting things than Wells, which is getting down to almost nothing. I’m at 6 thousand feet and it’s cold at night, so I need electric for heat and am looking for cheap rv parks with power. And it’s terribly pretty up here in the high desert.
