Marty's Travels

My house has wheels

Back in Chimacum

Despite the rain, that was a fun stay at Point Hudson. I’ll be going back a lot the next few days to watch the preparations for the race to Alaska.

I turned down a trip on Mark’s boat yesterday, though it was a gorgeous day. You see, race boats are designed for efficiency of systems, not human comfort. The deck was covered with essential working things of metal, which wore out my feet like I was walking on cannon balls. My feet are still sore after working on it several days ago.

It was odd to see so many sailboats with oars, and crews practicing with them like they’ve never done it before (they hadn’t). Then, the fast boats, seldom seen around these parts. “Sistership” is an all-woman boat highly regarded in California. There’s a fast one crewed by wheel-chair vets. Then there’s rumor of an ultra-fast race-breaking boat out of San Francisco that’s trying to get here.

The race, started last year, is shaping up to be a really big deal for Port Townsend and it will be a kick to watch it….
