Marty's Travels

My house has wheels

A Day

Breakfast this morning was at the Hudson Point Cafe, one of the three restaurants here. Famously good food, notoriously slow service. But it’s been that way for decades.

Next was a run to Sequim for some grocery shopping. When I hit the point of no return I heard on the marine radio a bunch of orcas were going past the point. Dang. Oh well, there are probably more following, and they have to turn around to get out of the strait so maybe I’ll catch them yet.

I lent a hand to a sailor today that is here from San Francisco for Race to Alaska. Check out http://r2ak.com for more information. Basically, you race from Port Townsend to Ketchikan, 750 miles. The most important rule is no motors allowed. You can walk, run, row, paddle, or sail. Fly, I guess, but no motors.

Anyway, I went down to help a guy with a most bizarre sailboat get moored. One thing led to another, we got the boat’s “outriggers” out. Mark just came by to give me a beer as a thanks and talk me into helping him tomorrow to step the mast (about 40 feet). I haven’t a clue how this is done without a crane, but I’ll find out. His crew is expected to show up soon. Meanwhile I guess I’m it.

So I’ll have a horse in this race. It will take them a few days to reach Alaska, and I’ll be anxiously watching to see how he does. This is going to be a lot of fun.
