Marty's Travels

My house has wheels

Gettin’ through West Texas

As usual, West Texas involves covering a lot of miles, and there is little to tempt one to stop and tarry a while. But, the route I’m taking (SE to NW) to Clovis, NM is a wonderfully scenic and varied view from behind the wheel. Much to see, little to do.

Last night I stayed at Hords Lake COE campground, near Coleman. It happens to be about the only area with people I’ve seen that Verizon does not have coverage. The lake (as are all reservoirs in Texas) was very low, but if the water was at the preferred level this campground would be one of the best I’ve seen. The campsights, huge and paved, are arranged so that everyone would have their own grassy shoreline to enjoy. Groves of live oak (the elevation kind) provide shade and privacy, yet the land is open and grassy. A lot of art went into the design of this place.

I’m in a town called Post, which is, typically, a working town for ranching, oil extraction, and now, wind power. West Texas is certainly taking advantage of it’s constant wind; I’m sure they have the biggest wind farm I’ve seen, and I have seen some big installations. It’s an eerie feeling seeing nothing but spinning blades everywhere you look, but it’s a pleasant sight. Don’t you wish the desert could get up and move and wave it’s arms rather than just sit there?

Tomorrow I head to Lubbock and beyond to Clovis, New Mexico. Out of Texas! In less than a month!
