I&#8217;m always a bit confused about tides on the Gulf: where I come from tides are measured in feet, several in some cases, but the Gulf measures it in inches.  Nonetheless, a &#8220;high&#8221; tide of 8 inches can cover a lot of land.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, up on Mustang Island where I really wanted to camp out and do some beach driving, it&#8217;s a different story.  Mustang is lower than Padre (we&#8217;re talking about a foot or two) so it&#8217;s much wetter and the beaches are more prone to flooding.  As it is the beaches are in pretty bad shape for driving: rough and wash-boarded, with soft dry sand-holes.<\/p>\n<p>So the conditions here (wind, tides, beaches) and the forecast (wind, rain, cold) say I&#8217;ll head to Harlingen on Thursday.  I&#8217;ll still get the weather this weekend, but it will be warmer.
